Under this section I'll be putting up video posts, progress, and screenshots as I proceed through LotR. Every video is from one session. If there are any questions about these videos, gameplay, or technical questions, feel free to send me an email at bslor@wisc.edu and will be more than happy to answer them to the best I can. Hope you enjoy! :P
This is a video I made (and uploaded to youtube™) to show the LotR character creation screen and what you normally have to do in most MMORPGs. The sound is fairly quiet so you won't be able to hear me walk you through unless you crank up the volume on your computer (but make sure to turn it down afterwards or else you'll get freaked out when doing other things later).
I chose to go with a Human Champion. He does fast dps (damage per second), so in other words, very agile and kills mobs (short for mobile objects otherwise referred to mainly monsters/creatures in MMOs) really fast.
Time Played (Session): 6 hrs.
So after a few levels and quests, I ended up finally getting a profession as an Armsman. The area that I'm in, I took some time to run around and mine for ore and killed mobs while doing so to gain xp (experience points). Quality is kinda fuzzy and no sound sorry.
So as I was questing in this area, I noticed more chat channels had been added for me such as the OOC channel. OOC stands for "out of character" so in other words, when you don't want to be "role playing", you chat in this channel. Since I'm not a big fan of "role playing" in MMOs, I just stayed in the OOC channel and talked to people. One guy I met that I thought was interesting was Akeloth, a Human Bard. He was helpful enough to answer n00b questions I had about LotR such as where do I go next for so and so quests.
Time Played (Session): 3 hrs.
After questing for awhile and completing those quests, I ran back into town to turn them in. When turning in your quests, you are given money and/or gear (armor, potions, weapons, etc.) as a reward for your efforts. Some quests are called chain quests because they continue one after the other until you get to the last quest of that chain that give you a big reward.
Time Played (Session): 2 hrs.
This is just a clip of me showing the forest I'm about to run into to work on quests. Youtube video quality does no justice. The graphics are just amazing in LotR.
Time Played (Session): 3 hrs.
This is me entering Bree, one of the larger cities where you can find characters of all levels running around in. For instance, I saw a level 47 character riding a horse through town so I sent him/her a private message.
Frozenyogurt: hey, could i ask you a couple of questions? Rimlock: sure Frozenyogurt: I'm playing LotRo for a internet studies course in college, and as I was playing, I was wondering how big the LotR community on here is? Is it different from WoW in anyway? More helpful perhaps? Or really the same as other MMos? Rimlock: much smaller than wow...much older than wow...much more helpful than wow Frozenyogurt: Really? That's interesting. What do you think the average age of a LotR player would be? Rimlock: 20-25, I would say Rimlock: not as many teens as wow has...you get a lot of 13-18 there Frozenyogurt: Lol yea you do. Frozenyogurt: Awesome, thanks for your time.
Time Played (Session): 2 hrs.
This is the bank vault they have in the big cities where you can deposit things from your bags that you have on your toon. The only things that can't be deposited are quest items.
Time Played (Session): 1 hrs.
What is Lord of the Rings Online (LotR Online)?
"Welcome. In the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle-earth was never simply a setting for his stories. In the fifty years of writing that produced the history of Middle-earth --- including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit --- the objective was to create a living, breathing world. The War of the Ring was never just a background for the story of the Fellowship --- it was a living, comprehensive history through which the lives of Frodo and his companions moved. The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™ offers you the chance to truly experience the War of the Ring... to move through the world of Middle-earth freely, to join the Free Peoples as they face the shadows of evil that threaten to engulf the world.
This is Middle-earth's last great age of heroes... you have been called to join the ranks of those who will be remembered in song and story as the Third Age passes and the Fourth Age begins!"
- Welcome introduction from LotR Online
What kind of races are there?
Races available in LotR Online are: Man, Dwarf, Hobbit, & Elf. (Note: The only race that does not have a female option are the Dwarves. At the moment, I have no idea why.)
What classes are available?
Classes that are available in LotR Online differ from which race you choose. So therefore, depending on which race you choose, you get different choices of class.
